Doonbeg International Golf Links

Just 19 miles (35 minutes) from Coastal Way Lodge, Trump International Golf Links is an essential stop for any ultimate Irish golf tour. Designed to follow the natural, rugged contours of the Atlantic coastline, it offers a "once-in-a-lifetime" round of golf.

For those looking to complete the ultimate Irish golf circuit, Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg is an essential stop. Coastal Way Lodge is perfectly positioned just 19 miles (35 minutes) away, making it easy to enjoy the luxury and drama of this world-class course while returning to our cozy, local hospitality in the evening.

Doonbeg is famous for its "least disturbance" design, where the 18 holes were carved naturally into the massive, 100-foot-high sand dunes. With 16 of the 18 holes offering direct views of the Atlantic, it is a visual masterpiece that challenges every club in your bag.

2026 Special Event: The Amgen Irish Open

We are thrilled to be a convenient base for fans during the 2026 Amgen Irish Open, which will be hosted at Trump International Doonbeg from September 10th to 13th, 2026. If you are planning to watch stars like Rory McIlroy compete on the West Coast, we recommend booking your stay at the Lodge well in advance!

What to Expect

Doonbeg is famous for its massive, 100-foot-high sand dunes and a layout that feels as though it was carved by the ocean itself.

  • The Landscape: 16 of the 18 holes offer direct views of the Atlantic Ocean. The course is a "least disturbance" design, meaning the fairways and greens follow the ancient movement of the dunes.
  • The Challenge: Expect a true test of links golf. The wind off the Atlantic is a constant factor, and the thick marram grass punishingly rewards accuracy over distance.
  • Five-Star Service: From the moment you arrive at the gate, the service is world-class. Expect bag drop assistance, a warm welcome from the starter, and top-tier facilities.
  • The 2026 Amgen Irish Open: Please note that the club will host this prestigious DP World Tour event from September 10th to 13th, 2026. The course will be in championship condition, but visitor access will be restricted during this period.

Opening Hours & 2026 Season

While the course is open year-round (weather permitting), the experience changes with the seasons:

  • Golf Course: Open daily from dawn until dusk. Peak season runs from April through October.
  • The Pro Shop: Typically open from 07:30 to 18:00 during the summer months.
  • Trump’s Bar & Restaurant: Open daily for lunch and dinner, offering a relaxed atmosphere with views over the 18th green.
  • White Horses Spa: Following a major refurbishment, the spa is expected to fully reopen in late Spring 2026.

Step-by-Step Visitor Guide

  1. Advance Booking: Tee times are highly sought after. We recommend booking at least 6 months in advance, especially for summer dates.
  2. Handicap & Equipment: While there isn't a strict handicap certificate requirement for casual play, an intermediate skill level is recommended to enjoy the course. Premium TaylorMade rental sets are available in the Pro Shop.
  3. The Arrival: Drive through the main gates and follow the winding path to the Clubhouse. Staff will meet you at the bag drop to take your clubs to the staging area.
  4. Warm-Up: Your green fee includes access to the driving range and short-game area. A shuttle service is provided from the Clubhouse to the practice facilities.
  5. Caddie Services: For the best experience, request a caddie. Doonbeg has many "blind" shots where local knowledge of the dunes and wind is invaluable.
  6. Dress Code: Proper golf attire is required (collared shirts, tailored trousers/shorts, and soft spikes). Denim and tracksuits are not permitted on the course.
  7. The 19th Hole: After your round, head to Trump’s Bar for their famous seafood chowder or a pint of Guinness while watching other players tackle the challenging 18th green.

Facilities for Visitors

  • The Performance Centre: Features state-of-the-art swing analysis technology for those looking for a lesson before their round.
  • Locker Rooms: Guests have access to luxurious locker room facilities, including showers and fresh towels—perfect for freshening up before the 35-minute drive back to Coastal Way Lodge.
  • Dining: Choose between the casual "Trump’s Bar" or the more formal "Ocean View Restaurant" for a fine-dining experience overlooking the waves.

Scenic Stops: The Coastal Drive to Doonbeg

The 35-minute drive from Coastal Way Lodge to Doonbeg takes you along a breathtaking stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. Don't just rush to the first tee—make time for these iconic coastal highlights along the way:

  • Spanish Point (8 miles / 15 minutes): Named after the ill-fated ships of the Spanish Armada that foundered here in 1588, this is one of Clare’s most beautiful "horseshoe" bays. It’s a perfect spot to pull over, stretch your legs on the sandy beach, and watch the Atlantic swells that make this a premier surfing destination.
  • Quilty Village (13 miles / 22 minutes): A traditional fishing village where you can see the distinctive "currachs" (traditional Irish boats) still in use. Stop by the Seafield Pier for a panoramic view that stretches all the way back to the Cliffs of Moher to the north and forward to the mountains of Kerry in the south.
  • White Strand, Doonbeg (18 miles / 33 minutes): Located just before you reach the golf club, this Blue Flag beach is a hidden sanctuary. It is crystal clear and incredibly peaceful—a great place for a quick "saltwater reset" before your round begins.
  • Kilkee Cliffs (7 miles past Doonbeg): If you have extra time after your round, continue south for 10 minutes to the Kilkee Cliffs. While less famous than Moher, many locals prefer them for their rugged, "untouched" feel and the spectacular Pollock Holes (natural rock swimming pools).

The "Lodge to Links" Shortcut

While the N67 is the main route, we recommend taking the coastal R482 road through Spanish Point. It only adds 2 minutes to your journey but keeps the ocean in your sightline for almost the entire drive.
