Beaches & Coastlines

The West of Ireland is defined by its relationship with the Atlantic. From the doorstep of Coastal Way Lodge, you have access to everything from world-famous surf breaks to hidden, tranquil swimming coves.

Clahane Shore: The Local’s Secret

  • Distance: 2.5km (Approx. 4-minute drive or a scenic 30-minute walk)
  • What to expect: A stunning, rugged rocky shoreline rather than a sandy beach. It is famous for its crystal-clear natural swimming pools and is a favorite for evening "golden hour" swims.
  • Step-by-Step Guide: Head west from the Lodge toward the Cliffs of Moher. Take the coastal turn-off toward the water. Park along the shoreline and look for the slipway.
  • Opening Hours: Open 24/7. Best enjoyed at high tide for the best swimming conditions.

Lahinch Beach: The Surf Hub

  • Distance: 4km (Approx. 6-minute drive)
  • What to expect: A sprawling, gold-sand crescent beach. It’s a bustling hub for surfers, families, and walkers. You’ll find lifeguards, surf schools, and plenty of coffee spots along the promenade.
  • Step-by-Step Guide: Drive east into Liscannor and follow the R478 straight into Lahinch. Parking is available at the large seafront car park (seasonal charges apply).
  • Opening Hours: Beach access is 24/7. Lifeguards are generally on duty from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM during the summer months (June–August).

White Strand (Miltown Malbay): Family Friendly

  • Distance: 17km (Approx. 15-minute drive)
  • What to expect: A sheltered, Blue Flag beach known for its pristine white sand and calm waters. It is much smaller and quieter than Lahinch, making it ideal for families with young children.
  • Step-by-Step Guide: Travel south through Lahinch on the N67. Follow signs for Miltown Malbay, then look for the "White Strand" coastal signs just before reaching the town.
  • Opening Hours: Open 24/7. Lifeguarded during the summer season.

Spanish Point: History & Waves

  • Distance: 18km (Approx. 20-minute drive)
  • What to expect: Named after the Spanish Armada ships that wrecked here in 1588, this is a beautiful sandy beach popular for both surfing and swimming. It’s home to the famous "Snámhaí Sásta" community morning swims.
  • Step-by-Step Guide: Head south through Lahinch and follow the N67 coastal route toward Miltown Malbay. Follow the signs for Spanish Point as you approach the village.
  • Opening Hours: Open 24/7. Lifeguarded seasonally during summer months.

Fanore Beach: The Burren’s Edge

  • Distance: 25km (Approx. 35-minute drive)
  • What to expect: A vast, limestone-fringed sandy beach backed by extensive sand dunes. It feels wild and remote, offering incredible views of the Aran Islands and the Galway coast.
  • Step-by-Step Guide: Take the stunning coast road (R477) through Doolin and around Black Head. The drive itself is one of the most beautiful in Ireland.
  • Opening Hours: Open 24/7. Free parking and public toilets are available on-site.

Bishop's Quarter: The North Clare Gem

  • Distance: 32km (Approx. 40-minute drive)
  • What to expect: Located just past Ballyvaughan, this beach offers a unique mix of sand and Burren limestone. It is very quiet and offers a panoramic view across Galway Bay.
  • Step-by-Step Guide: Follow the R480/N67 through the heart of the Burren toward Ballyvaughan. The beach is accessed by a narrow byroad just north of the village.
  • Opening Hours: Open 24/7. Best for walking and quiet reflection.

Know Before You Go

  • Check the Tides: Many of our local spots, especially Clahane, are best at high tide. We recommend downloading a tide chart app during your stay.
  • Safety First: The Atlantic is powerful. Only swim in designated areas and always heed the flags (Red = No Swimming, Yellow/Red = Lifeguarded zone).
  • Dog Policy: On Blue Flag beaches like Lahinch, dogs are generally restricted between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM in the summer. At other times, please keep them on a lead.
  • Leave No Trace: Help us preserve our coastline. Please take all rubbish with you and respect the delicate dune ecosystems.
